1851-1904
Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis to a wealthy family, and was married from 1870-1882, bearing six children. After her husband's death, she pursued a career as a writer to support her family. She wrote 2 novels and many short stories. She is considered one of the leaders of the "local color" literary tradition, writing her stories in the rich Creole culture she was accustomed to. Her most famous novel, The Awakening, was considered at the time of its publishing to be too controversial, and was not fully appreciated until after Chopin's death.
Kate Chopin's literary career was fairly short. She published just two novels, At Fault and The Awakening, as well as many famous short stories, such as "Desiree's Baby" and "The Story of an Hour."
