If you are just starting out reading the classics, you may want to pick an author based on reading difficulty level or interests. For example, Ernest Hemingway wrote in a manner that was very direct, and less verbose than, say, Hawthorne. Or, if you are interested in early feminism, read "A Room of One's Own" by Virgina Woolf.
