Tip of the Week

1851-1904
Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis to a wealthy family, and was married from 1870-1882, bearing six children. After her husbandīs death, she pursued a career as a writer to support her family. She wrote 2 novels and many short stories. She is considered one of the leaders of the "local color" literary tradition, writing her stories in the rich Creole culture she was accustomed to. Her most famous novel, The Awakening, was considered at the time of its publishing to be too controversial, and was not fully appreciated until after Chopinīs death.
